Living In These Modern Times

The topic of this post is about a cultural shift taking place across Japan right now that is also something we are seeing globally. If you follow modern Japanese social trends, you may have heard of the "Satori Generation" (Satori Sedai / さとり世代).

Named after the Buddhist term for enlightenment (Satori), these young people have...

This trio of movies from A24 are a blast!

They were released in the order of X, Pearl, and MaXXXine, but I would recommend if you are going to watch them, watch them in the order of Pearl, X, MaXXXine.

This order takes you through three different time periods progressing along the timeline from earliest (in time) to latest. You have Pearl taking place in the WWI/Spanish...

If you haven't seen this animated short, I HIGHLY recommend it. It perfectly captures the state of the world we live in today.

The band Tool has some really cool and interesting art on their albums. Not everyone knows that this artwork is from an artist named Alex Grey which I was introduced to back in the 90's. He has a really interesting art style that blends human anatomy with glowing multidimensional spiritual energy.

Check it out if you haven't heard of him or seen his work. It's really cool....

I was reading Hacker News and came across this blog post from someone who enjoyed using Google Maps to wander around areas of Tokyo:

I have used Street View on Google Maps to cruise around Japan as well and it is a...

The text written below comes from a page on BBS Culture from my web site, but I figured I'd post it here for those who are interested in old school digital artforms during the reign of the Bulletin Board System.

These forms of art are still being done today, and it is just amazing what people can do. They literally hand type out each character. That image you see above?...

For those interested in old school ANSI/ASCII art, there are still art groups around that release art packs which you can see at 16 Colors (linked below). One of those groups that are still active is called "Impure" which released their Impure #93 pack today if you want to check it out.

Some art in that pack is from aNACHRONiST of the aBSiNTHE BBS (the same guy who...

Some of you have probably heard, seen, or eaten the popular Japanese snack called Onigiri which is basically a triangle of rice with some kind of "stuffing" in the middle, whether that be a meat, vegetable, combination of the two, etc.

There is also another form of this called Musubi which is more like a tiny rice sandwhich and much easier to make in my opinion. This post I'll go over how to make it (spoiler, its nothing fancy and super easy). It is a really simple and quick way to put together a...

When it comes to horror movies, I really like the sub-genre of "occult/supernatural horror". Movies like Weapons, Paranormal Activity (first one), The Witch, Bring Her Back, and others.

One of my all time favorites is Hereditary and is one I recommend if you are a fan of the genre.

This is one of those movies where there are a lot of little things going on that you will for...

Come play Diablo 1 online! Brought to you by aBSiNTHE BBS. Friendly competition going on with the folks on the board. You can play, but in order to view the leaderboard, you will need to sign up on the board if you aren't on there already. Which you'd want to do anyways because the board is fiiiire.

I heard a lot of buzz around this movie, with several people recommending I watch it, so I did, and I really liked it so am also recommending it!

I thought the acting was excellent in this movie and especially liked the performance by Inde Navarette. The various ways she portrayed a variety of scenes involving emotions seemed like a difficut task, yet I thought she did an...

I was recommended this movie by aNACHRONiST of the aBSiNTHE BBS. He is a big horror fan, and knowing that I am a big fan of Japan and was looking for more J-Horror, he suggested I watch Audition.

I did, and I really liked it a lot and am recommending it for those who like horror/J-horror, or revenge movies.

The style of some J-horror can sometimes seem, a bit "slow...

I'm Knight Shadow, the SysOp of a BBS called The Boneyard. Met a fellow in BBS land called @macross who introduced me to this site (and is also on here). Created an account, checking things out, and giving the features a try to see if maybe it'd be a fun place to meet folks and chat. I like the closeness and vibe that forums in a BBS offer as opposed to big social media networks like Facebook/Twitter etc and so Cyberspace so far seems to have a similar smaller community vibe like a BBS, so I'm curious...
