Setting Up Homer for my Home Lab. It's all yaml configured, and I was thinking about it a bit. One of the main reasons I've not delved too deep into self hosted services, beyond what I have now, is that a lot of the services are like this. They use yaml or json to do more than hold configuration data.

Like, I get it, you want to structure the setup and operational parameters. But every single item on a page is a block of yaml? Really?

Of course there's part of me that gives the benefit of the doubt and...

So, I've decided on a course of action. The wall I keep running into is that I have these things I want to do. And I'm like "I should make a note of these things." and then the subsequent thought is "I should put these all somewhere centralized to where I'll be making them happen." so then I get started looking for something that will do that. A self hosted, note taking app. And then I get stuck down a rabbit hole.

HOWEVER, I have decided on this course of action immediately:
Home Lab Dashboard >...

=== Calling All Agents of Chaos ===

For an interesting and conversation jarring experience. (And your own amusement at the resulting confusion) Reply to a person randomly in a conversation in a suggestive voice "And He/She/They did!"

Enthusiasm and the right Em-fah-sis on the correct Sil-ah-bul. Is important.

I completely regret trying to do any kind of creative project work today. My goal: Work on my personal site.
What did I actually do?

  • Spin up a LXC to run a web dashboard, because I need SOME sort of window on the external world and not live in complete obliviousness.
  • Realize that my Hypervisor is hopelessly behind in updates and I could very likely crash everything if I try.
  • try and put the dashboard together with manual configuration.....fail
  • try and deploy the dashboard with docker.....fail -...

Back in the saddle again. Or that's how The song goes. My plan for today is to set up a Dashboard for my Home lab that will double as a browser home page. Should include local Service Links, Server Health Stats, and News feeds that are De-Junked so I am not entirely out of the loop (Since I've exclusively been on Cyberspace lately)

Then, I am taking notes from the spec for the desktop version of Cyberspace to jazz up my personal site a bit. More notes on ideas than anything now.

Maybe some gaming, and...

Mortality

So, I recently spent some time in the hospital. Blood infection, kidney infection. It was definitely very not good.

When it began, I initially thought it was a cold. I had a fever and chills, so I figured "sleep it off".

My better judgment (my other half) insisted I go to the ER. So I did. Turned out, I was about a half a day away from septic shock.

A week later, and lots of time to think, I realize that's the closest I've ever been to dying, and it's got me feeling a bit more grateful for the life I...

I was having a conversation with @7spires and I have to admit, Markdown is an interesting language. I have not fully committed the syntax to memory, but I seem hyperfixated at the moment to use it as frequently as I can so I can memorize the syntax like I did with HTML and CSS.

  • Side note, CSS, especially the pseudo selectors and advanced stuff like SASS and pre-processors have made Web Dev a far more complex and interesting area of study. I started back before you could do things like :after and...

I was just thinking to myself, as I was sitting in cIRC: "Wouldn't it be great if the chat could have a sidebar? Cause I don't want to halt my conversation just cause I have a random idea."

I started just kind of randomly surfing on the webring here, and have seen some pretty phenomenal pages and people. Now, I know there are terms around now that define places like cyberspace and sites on webrings, or gopher sites, or even ~verse or ~(insert word here) collectives. All of them are areas of the internet that are not thoroughly indexed, but don't require any special technology and the hoops to jump through to access and engage aren't complicated.

At some point in the past, there was this...

So, I have a tendency to gravitate towards things that are shiny, cool, neat, etc. It's how I got a chance to test and use a LeapMotion before they shifted directions. Why I have countless accounts and gadgets from all over the place. And why I've been a long time user of Virtual Worlds.

Virtual worlds? Like games you mean?

No, not exactly. This was something that came about around a little before World of Warcraft. And there wasn't (nor is there still any) real goal or structured "Game Play"...
