Book recommendations
Looking for some new books to read. I have been working my way through the Linux basics for hackers, the Linux bible and the LFS manual just for fun. I’m also a massive enjoyer of Lord of the Rings and the Inheritance Cycle, t he Stormlight Archive is also on my reading list and I loved The motion Martian
Any suggestions whatsoever are welcome!
Looking up
As many of you probably noticed, I took a break from Astral-OS development. This was due to a combination of me preparing to move and my lifeguarding job becoming more stressful.
I am still preparing to move but I’m getting back into development. Right now I’m working on a custom Wayland compositor and my homelab. Things are looking up though, even though I’m moving and will be getting a new job I’m going to restart Astral-OS development shortly.
Thanks for patiently following this project, chooms!
Moving away
I’ll start this off by apologizing for dropping off the face of the internet. Ive been occupied by my job more than usual, I work as a lifeguard (don’t ask me for medical advice, go see a doctor) and to no one’s surprise it’s a stressful job. I have also been preparing for a temporary move to a completely place, I leave in about two weeks.
Anyway, all this to say, no, im not dead, just busy. And I have not forgotten about the Astral-OS project. I’ll get it out when I can and I am by no means leaving it...
Ive been daily driving void and overall I love it but sometimes it doesn’t feel right. The lack of SystemD is a double edged sword and the small repo is occasionally frustrating. This weekend I’m going to make the switch back to Arch Linux or Artix, not sure which one yet.
This doesn’t mean that Astral-OS will switch to an Arch base and I’m going to dual boot arch with void or just continue development on Arch.
I very much value stability and I’m sure I would love Debian if I ever gave it a shot but I...
Work is hard
Work is hard. My job basically requires me to be alert 24 hours a day for a week and to help out when things go wrong. I love my job but burnout is a real problem sometimes.
New laptop
I need a new laptop for software development. Any suggestions?
I finally got my hands on a TOOL band shirt!
Delays suck
I’m sick of delaying the alpha release. From now on I will be committing my entire weekends to getting Astral-OS out. I’ve already got a few files out on GitHub but my main stumbling block is the void MK-iso utility. For some reason I can’t get it to include the packages I want so my top priority is to fix this and release the .iso file on Sourceforge. I am quite busy with work so all my free time will now be spent on development.
Another thing I want to do is to make a terminal emulator that doubles as...
Welp
Just bricked my astral-OS install, screwed up some stuff when I was partitioning my drive. Not a huge setback but I am very busy this week so I probably won’t get much done. Glad I got a few things uploaded to GitHub before I borked my drive though.
Dang it
For some dang reason, I can't get the ISO file to include and install the proper packages. Not sure what I am going to do about it just yet. I am going to be pretty busy in the next few months but I will still be working on Astral-OS on the weekends.
Wayland compositors
So far I am using the Sway compositor for Astral-OS but it feels like more than I need. I only need a compositor to run a single full screen terminal on boot. Does anyone know of a simple compositor like that? I will use sway for the alpha release and will most likely just remove any part of it that I don’t want but it will be subject to change.
Back to work
Going to resume development in about a week. My schedule is chaotic and development sometimes has to take a backseat. Thanks for following along with the project despite the delays, I’m itching to get the alpha version out ASAP.
Unfortunately I was unable to get the alpha version out on GitHub. I will attempt to get it out tomorrow but I am going on a road trip for a couple weeks and will be unable to continue work during that time. I will get it out eventually and I made great progress yesterday and today.
all or nothing
The Astral-OS iso is almost done being created and I will slap it into a VM to see if it works.
Wish me luck!
Slowly but surely
Today I spent a lot of time working with the void Linux mklive and was banging my head against the wall for literal hours wondering why on earth I couldn’t add Sway to the package list of stuff I wanted pre installed. I then came to the horrifying realization that it cant be included due to it being classified as a DE. I think I’ll get around this by adding it to the post-install script.
Oh and I also ran a Git community with sudo without realizing and it took me far to long to troubleshoot.
