I beat end of abyss on ps5 and I wanted to talk about it a little! (Spoilers!)

I’ve been waiting for it since it was announced at the game awards/summer game festival (I can’t remember, it’s been a while)…

I’ve been enjoying these shorter titles that don’t take forever to complete- and other players aren’t there to ruin the immersion. Reanimal is another example (maybe I’ll write on that one later, too).

The environment and monsters were really exciting, the vibe of a little exploring character descending into a world of body horror in industrial environments really reminded me of Phil Tippet’s mad god and Junkhead by Takehide Hori.

The creatures themselves had really great silhouettes and simplistic designs, but they never felt repetitive despite the game needing quite a bit of backtracking to complete. The “chest huggers” and “lab experiments” near the end of the game were probably my most favourite designs, but they’re honestly all pretty cool.

The bosses were also great, really liked the “centipede” and radiated parasite host.

The game’s story has themes of experimental medicine gone awry, questionable artificial intelligence and humans messing with dark things… which all come together in notes from dead characters you scan along the way (like resident evil!)

My one criticism would be that the map wasn’t really reliable (especially because as I was playing it was bugged) and even after I was accustomed to them the controls weren’t the most sturdy or comfortable, so I was missing a lot of shots with the weaponry. A couple areas had enemies feeling like bullet sponges you’d have to kite around, but honestly these are all minor nitpicks.

I think I’ll 100% this one because i find it such a joy and it’s simple enough. Gotta finish some art first! (:
