[ESC]“Hope” movie thoughts + blizzcon
Wandered in to see the South Korean movie “hope” this afternoon. (Spoilers ahead!)
I loved the first small chunk of the movie. A clumsy cop was chasing around some kind of unknown monster through a small countryside town. The destroyed alley set pieces, deaths by flying objects and gore were really cool… There was a lot of mystery and chaos- it really built up tension in a grounded way that felt unique and fun… but unfortunately after the introduction of the first creature the movie really fell flat. Just a whole lot of bad jokes and strange plot choices. The whole thing became extremely nonsensical. There were a lot of pointless shots of creatures chasing the characters that could’ve been cut and unfortunately the bad CGI really took me out of the experience in places- which usually isn’t something that really bothers me..
If anyone’s interested there are other Korean films I’d recommend instead like “the host”, “a tale of two sisters” and “the wailing”. Even the more western film “Mickey 17” by Bong Joon Ho was pretty neat.
Today they unveiled two cinematic trailers for “Diablo V” and a new “StarCraft” project. Both had very nice visuals worth checking out on their own. The zerglings felt really scary. Love them.
Diablo 4 lost a lot of its grittiness in favour of glowing particle effects and crossovers from other IPs which I’m not a fan of at all, so I’d like to wait to see their aesthetic choices for this next game. It’s sort of a shame they’re abandoning it for a sequel in ways, but I always look forward to seeing what the concept artists can show after (which hopefully come in a new artbook for me!)
Diablo II resurrected + its recent surprise expansion are probably the most fun I’ve had with the whole series… so I’m always looking for a bit of that magic in their titles. Time will tell!
