[ESC]Godzilla minus zero thoughts + spoilers
Reader beware!
I had a lot of fun tonight, the imax was basically empty because the theatre screwed up the screenings so I basically had the whole thing to myself.
This movie had a lot of deep themes regarding World War II and America with varying perspectives on that including hate, which I’m surprised they included. The writing was very well done. There were also graphic depictions of Hiroshima which were quite haunting as well.
Ghidorah has been revealed now, and it was great to see him emerge as an alien from a meteorite. I think I preferred the American films/KOTM look more, but I appreciated his classic chirps coming back (why would you not?!). His heads also moved around as they did in the Showa era this time… (like overhead wires) that was fantastic. His lightning also felt a lot more impactful. (The little sparks!). His theme was extremely cool too. The composer killed It.
Godzilla wasn’t around a whole lot, which isn’t actually uncommon for his films. You still feel him everywhere when he’s not on the screen however, from the ruins of Ginza to the people who had died from mutation because of his exposure. (the gnarly photographs were a neat touch). The fight between the two monsters was more animalistic than any other movie which was an interesting take. There was a small ode to Noriyoshi Ohrai’s painting in there… and a lot of body parts/gore were flying around. I couldn’t help but be reminded of Heisei Gamera stuff. My only criticism is that I felt as though ghidorah absorbing bits of Godzilla made him lose a bit of his unique identity in the end, but I can understand why they chose that direction.
Overall the first movie will always be lightning in a bottle. I’m still really happy for their small team that won an Oscar for all their efforts!! This one felt much more like an old school, traditional Godzilla movie for better or worse, and because of that, as a fan I had an amazing time. I’m not sure more casual moviegoers will like this as much as the others (fine by me!)… but hopefully some of you will still enjoy it!
