i love the "word calculator" apologetics as a justification for genai use. truly. "it's just another layer of abstraction, prompting is a skill!" if this were the case, then surely writers would be the best suited for programming/coding in our current claudeslop techspace? if it was simply a layer of abstraction, one which yields the best results through competent and intentional description, then why is it instead that writers and creatives intensely condemn the tool and businesses have no desire to convert them? why is it that so many aibros simply cannot be bothered to read or write? "summarize, highlight the key points."

these are certainly tools, at the very least, but a word calculator it is not. at least not in its present state. maybe earlier in its development, or maybe i'd have bought this if it was confined to coding environments, acting as a linter, helping the individual to maintain proper syntax and stylize as needed. but it's an app. it's a friend. it's a boyfriend, a study tool, a thought machine. we are offloading thinking, and the most genius among us, individuals smarter than i could ever hope to be, are allowing themselves to be neutered. uncritically.

i'm prepared to face pushback for this, but of course, i hate genai use. i type this statement on a website i've grown to love, which was truthfully created from passion using/assisted by genai. everything is genai now. it's inescapable. so how then can i hold an individual responsible? the apologist will argue that "it's how the machine is used" and of course there is some truth to this; but for all my non-american readers, i'm sure this argument sounds familiar when speaking of guns, cars, or even other important but sketchy software. while something like a gun might seem like a reach, remember that genai is notably responsible for the suicide of several children. is there an amount of death which is acceptable? so long as every site can have the same shitty claude ui? i'm shouting this into the void however, i don't expect anyone to stop, i don't expect a blog post to make a change in the world or even here, but i do know that i have a moral imperative to create and write and say pretentious shit simply because i love to. no calc needed. (that's short for calculator for anyone new here btw calc is short for calculator i just didn't want to type the whole word that's why)
