Occupational overreach, or am I the crazy one?

I'm curious if it's a standard practice or if I just get lucky.

Is it common for an employer to schedule events outside of working hours, demand that employees go, and assume that you're good to stay the night near the venue so long as they offer a hotel?

Like, if this was a "hey, we wanna do this big thing to show team appreciation and here's what we're willing to do to help make it happen" that's one thing, but when you say "I'm not planning to stay the night out there" and HR meets you with a stern "why not?!" that feels a bit over the top to me.

Is this kind of bleed-thru from work to personal life a regular thing at other companies or is it just me? Am I the crazy one for not assuming that my employer owns me?
