[ESC]ODD QSO?
Good evening cyberspace!
So something i thought was a little odd and would LOVE some input into within the QSO stuff.
So let me fill you in!
So basically once a year where i live by there is a major highway called highway 27!
and once a year people lay out there garage sales on a set 3 days starting today aug 6!
So i hit the highway and got a few deals, but at one point i stopped somewhere in ohio and decided to key up on a repeater. Just simply throw out my call, i immediately get a callback!
This was super exciting to me! i only have one QSO on a vhf repeater. But like the guy whom owned the repeaters (he owns 3 in the local area) just was so hard to get the ball rolling with!
The QSO went something like this
STEAMY:$callsign monitoring
USER:$callsign $callsign
STEAMY: hey i appologize i didnt catch the full transmission i had the tone set as tone squelch instead of just tone.
USER:no problem! i was just answering
STEAMY:good good! so do you garage sale much?
USER:no
STEAMY: Oh understandable its very humid so you seem to have a great idea!
USER: yeah
USER: Can i get your call again?
STEAMY:$CALLSIGN
USER: OK GOT IT.
STEAMY: what was your call again?
USER: $CALLSIGN
STEAMY: say thats the same call as the repeater!
USER: yeah i own a 440, 2 meter and a 220 in town.
STEAMY:very nice!
STEAMY: You have a really nice callsign, very readable i dont know if you do shortwave but for me some people stuggle with my callsign on HF especially when im running QRP
USER:yeah thanks
STEAMY:so you like going to hamfests?
USER: no
STEAMY: oh, well they are usually quite a drive and people are very busy these days.
USER: yep
STEAMY: are you apart of a ham club?
USER: nope, too much comitment
STEAMY: yeah, clubs are pretty involved
USER: yup
USER: are you mobile or handy talkie?
STEAMY: im running handy talkie a ftd1 i got at $localhamfest, i used to run a 56r but it was too good of a deal at $localhamfest
USER:yep
(2 minutes of silence because i thought maybe i was talking to much and letting him talk)
STEAMY: Well im probably gonna get back to garage sale-ing, i appreciate the contact believe it or not ive only really made one other contact on VHF and UHF, i bascially live in a hole so the only time i get to talk to others on the radio is on HF or when i leave my city!
USER: ok good luck on deal finding.
USER: $CALLSIGN standing by
STEAMY: 73's
ENDCHAT
like it wasnt a bad qso but like the guy didnt really add anything to the conversation?!?
i know im being picky here, but it was really odd.
the one other QSO i have was in a big city and the guy i got was SUPER FRIENDLY and was really helpful! I explained to him i just got my tech license the week previous, so he was really good at kinda teaching me qso skills. I facepalm typing this but i called CQ on the repeater when i first started XD. So we kinda explained "yeah no you dont do that" and was really good at kinda guiding me with the qso. What do i go by? and i replied my callsign and he had to reword it about 2 times before i realized HE WANTED MY NAME NOT MY CALL. Again i basically was a utter noob at this point and was not apart of the local radio club. But like this recent ohio QSO was just so odd, a good rule of thumb ive learned is. IF YOU CANT FIND SOMETHING TO TALK ABOUT ON THE RADIO, TALK ABOUT RADIO. FAIR CHANCE THE PERSON WHO TOOK A QUIZ AND PASSED ENJOYS RADIO STUFF.
But guy was just not having it, such a wet paper towel.
Thinking back on it, i got my general's liscense because that first qso was so much fun and where i live i cant hit anything. What are your thoughts fellow hams? wet paper towel or im i just overthinking this?
