[ESC]My Useless Skills
I've been thinking about my skills in order to prepare for my future and my new life, and I've realized that I'm rather not suited to the context of our hyper-specialized society. Almost everything I can do (except, I suppose, programming) is essentially useless:
- Sword fighting: I've invested so much time in this that I could have gotten a university degree instead. Of course, that doesn't mean the degree is useful either.
- Endless aerobics: I can run 10 km at a 4-minute per km pace, and I'm also good with weights. It's not a world record, but it's not bad, but these days it's a completely secondary skill; you get around by car, speaking of which...
- Predictive driving, navigation, and 4x4: I've been driving without GPS my whole life, so I have a lot of experience navigating. I've also done quite a lot of off-roading, but in any case, all of this is useless in the context of cities and that damn Google Maps (which I don't use).
- I've managed to dive 25 meters on a single breath: It's not exactly a freediving record, but it does require some dedication. This is something I completely gave up when I transitioned; it doesn't go well with wigs and makeup.
- Lockpicking: Well, I'm not that great with lock picks, but I've opened a few doors with a drill. A practical person calls a locksmith.
- Basic plumbing, carpentry, and electrical work: I've invested enough time to know how to fix my own little problems, but I'm certainly no professional. Once again, a normal person calls a specialist.
- Basic wilderness survival: Little to explain; I've lived in small towns my whole life and done more or less voluntary training. None of this is useful these days.
- Narrative and writing: I've written more than fifteen books and thousands of articles online. This doesn't automatically make me "good," but I've put in a huge number of hours to hone this skill.
- Creating non-commercial video games: Nothing to add.
- Privacy-focused IT systems management: My systems are secure, but they are completely out of step with current commercial solutions.
If I think enought, I'm sure I would find more. What i've done with my life?
