I believe the best decision I've ever made was investing in my health.

I guess otherwise my life is not a success at all. I’m a trans who has screw up all around me, have no family, no work, no relationships, failed in a lot of projects... but I have health.

I’ve been the last twenty years reading a lot of studies about what was better for my health, and acted consequently. I’ve been depressed, I’ve been lost, I’ve been injured, but always been coherent and disciplined with my choices.

I’ll try to summarize what I did and what I achieved.

I didn’t start in a good position as a child. I ate terribly, didn't exercise at all, and was fat and clumsy. Also was a very sickly person and I had allergy.

In 1998 I got tired being weak and abused, so I joined a gym. My training focused mainly on weight lifting, but also included some cardio. I went from 106 kg to 85 kg.

In 1999 I started meditation. Easy to say, but I meditated every day in my life since.

In summer 2003 I started taking seriously my cardio training, so I began running. I’ve never been ambitious with this, as my weight was not competitive.

In 2008 I started taking better control of my diet. I completely cut out processed sugars, even in ingredients of processed foods. Later I cut out all high glycemic index foods, and processed meat. In Spain this is not easy because our food is very poor and an integral part of social culture. It’s difficult to say how difficult and social disrupting this is.

In 2010 I cleaned my sleep routine. I read studies about it and observed the habits of people who slept well. As example, I personally never sleep with my mobile phone in my bedroom.

In 2015 I decided to not use warmth water at all. I always showered with cold water. Always mean always, not a single warmth shower.

In 2021 I began sword fighting.

In 2022, when I transition I went down to 75 kg (i’m 1,90m). I unintentionally stopped eating meat too.

There were other minor non relevant activities. Some climbing, skating and boxing.

Currently my weekly training includes 4.5 hours of weight lifting, at least 4 hours of running (more in summer), and 10-12 hours of fencing.

I've never made excuses. If I had to be in the office in the morning, I'd get up at 5 AM and go for a run without breakfast, just as I fell out of bed.

I simply wanted to have decent health in my later years, but I got benefits I was not waiting for.

  • Good health: I rarely get sick, and when I get, it is in a very short period. Indeed I haven't taken a single medication since 1998. Also my allergy descended, and it's not noticeable while I'm training.
  • Perfect internal clock: I don’t need to look a clock, I know what time is it. I don’t even need an alarm, I awake at the time I propose.
  • Adaptation to extreme heat. Currently I can run with 45º Celsius and I don’t feel anything bad.
  • Cardio. Currently I have 42 basal beats per minute (that is, when I awake). I don't remember the last time I felt tired. My last perceptible boost was in march 2025, I didn’t take a single rest day since then.
  • I have a very curious benefit derived from meditation, but it's a little NSFW. If anyone wants, I can make a post about this.

So, going back to my initial point, I'm glad I invested in my health. I have no family, I have no income, but I’m better than I was in my 20s. I feel lucky in this regard.
