I changed the way use you-tube recently.

I have used pipe-pipe for a while to avoid adds and vertical short-form, but it was still a time sink for me. Even just the subscription feed is addictive and induces an inordinate and unintentional destruction of time.

Recently I reordered the interlace so I don't have a subscription inbox.

To discover new videos now I scroll through the list of my subscriptions checking each individual to see if they have uploaded something new.

This has had 2 effects

  1. Unintentional watch next time sink is no-longer a thing. I feels more like a chicken pecking for grubs then a goose being fattened for pate by feeding tube.
  2. I am much more likely to re-watch old videos from a few creators that I really enjoy, then new content from creators I don't like so much but who publish more regularly.

One of the creators I've come back to is CJ the X, their video Kiki's Delivery Service, which is mostly about the logic of the gift in producing the social (no relation), has been rattling around in my head for a few days.

Also I've obsessed with Plastic-Pills, who talks a lot about post-modernism and semiotics. Before watching his stuff I had heard of both of those things, but I didn't understand them in a way I feel I do now.

I remember my eldest sister explaining simulacrum to me during one Xmas. That year she was revising for third year exams for a bachelor's in marketing. It sounded like a so-what kind of idea. Crazy diagrams gesturing at deep meaning but without actually saying anything insightful. Like the Numogram.

I did not recognize the what a sign-system really was, or how penetrating an analysis it could seed. This was a component of critical thinking that I had never been exposed to properly.

I still don't understand it, but at least now I can see their is something to not understand.

These videos were genuinely food-for-thought -~- Not merely stimulation to satiate the gnawing desire to not exist as delivered by virtual feeding tube grafted onto my hand.
