[ESC]Why Soviet music?
Regarding @monimos ' post that was intended as a small reply to their recents about love for soviet songs (you can view them here)
But eventually it grew beyond a little remark and I think it is worthy of being a post on my wall. Still being completely subjective tho, but there is definitely someting to it.
If to talk about the first reason for such an appreciation that came up on my mind - I'd say that it was Soviet Culture in general. It's not even about how much simpler and less chaotic life was at that time, but about what people cared about. Soviet education and upbringing was strict, that hardened people, showed them humane values of life, moral of the story.
Fair to mention that I am talking about people specifically, more than a government apparatus. But of course, that life came with limitations. Most noticeable for this topic is limitation in expression, both cultural and physical. Cultural is that you won't be patted on your head for singing about praising the devil or how cool doing drugs is. Themes were a lot more pivotal (if it's not brotherhood of men in great war, for example).
Being together as a community/collective played a big part in soviet people' philosophy. Therefore most of the popular and or known soviet songs tell us, listeners, about not an individual experience, but something that could be experienced by almost anyone through life, bringing up similarities of human.
That was a cultural limitation, now physical reason of which was: lack of mass produced/acknowledged electronic synths and electrical instruments up to a late life of USSR. This and folk art I've just talked about were the ultimate reasons why you hear what you hear. Live music, acoustic guitar, wind instruments, sometimes orchestra. Because of conservatism on what real music is too btw, because previously it was way more difficult to learn such things all by yourself, especially in soviet union and you had to go to the music school. And as before so nowadays - it's still studying classics and playing solfeggio. Musical instruments was in general a rarity at that time, and a good quality instrument was practically unheard of, so people had to play with the cards they already had.
I think in general that's what giving this uniqueness to soviet music. And I am all for it to accompany me on some Saturday evening, reading a book under 2700K light.
