The odyssey + obsession thoughts (and spoilers)

Haven’t had a chance to read or post on cyberspace for a while. I’ve also bought a novel i mean to read soon, but It’s cram time with art for a few days, so I’ve gotta take that really seriously.

Finally caught obsession without a bad crowd and didn’t walk out this time! I really appreciated the actors in this one. For such a small film I’m surprised it didn’t feel like one of those standard “jumpscare” movies. The movements and sounds of Nicki in a few scenes were my favourite parts and it really reminded me of a certain ghost in Kairo. She had a really good angry yell, lol. Some of the “gross” stuff had me laughing too. It was really over-the-top in ways that felt genuine but still carefully constructed. It was surprisingly scary!

I can see why it did so well. I think as I’m writing this it’s the fifth or sixth highest grossing horror of all time. They should all be really proud.

The odyssey felt really good to see in theatres. The crowd was also decent. I was really fond of Polyphemus the cyclops. I appreciated the characterization, presenting him with his sheep and cheese. His demeanour felt like a feeble, lonely old man on such a large scale. I also appreciated the Sirens and Scylla. It was thoughtful to present the Sirens as hard to see in the distance, shrouded in mist surrounded by seals and skeletons. Sometimes that mystery (and allure!) makes things more impactful. Scylla’s scene was fast and pretty cool. It was a huge snakelike barnacle creature that disappears as fast as it appears, in a really intense segment.

I think Robert pattinsons character was my favourite. His acting was really great.

If I had any criticism, I think calypso felt a little too much like a modern runway model or something, she was very pretty in a way that didn’t suit the environment. (Does that make any sense?) Her costume was still very cool, but it sort of brought me out of Ogygia a few times.
