Internet horror

I just finished the novel “there is no antimemetics division”, a horror sci-fi written by a fellow with the username QNTM, who writes short form stories including some of the “SCP” files online.

• So I have to ask cyberspace, what is your favourite horror media online specifically? Please share.

It had a lot of the hallmarks of internet “creepypastas” (a moniker I don’t really like using, lol). It had some fun imagery and ideas but the very end of the book was pretty over-the-top and killed all the weird ideas and subtleties for me. I think its biggest strength was probably presenting its ideas and imagery as something that couldn’t really be relayed in anything outside of a novel or someone’s imagination.

I’m not really as much of a fan of the SCP stories as I used to be, so I’ve been trying to reignite that excitement with new stories.

Around 2008 (I think?) they were fresh and a whole lot of fun as a young teenager- but over the years it sort of lost its magic for me outside of a handful of “classics”. There’s just way too much now… with too many writers and after a while it definitely became diluted/exhausted. I do hope they’re explored by talented individuals in new ways in the future to reign in those ideas a bit. The backrooms film is a good example of that happening.

“The holders” series was always a little more exciting and memorable to me in its vague, repetitive, esoteric style… but it didn’t quite get as much traction and also suffered a similar oversaturation problem (the curator actually stopped taking entries), so there are a few of those I try to return to now and then.

I’m a big fan of dogscape too, which is very gruesome, bizarre and darkly humorous. It’s probably my favourite internet horror story.

This weekend I’ll be taking some time to read the original candle cove by Kris Straub (for the first time!) and checking out the Glendale archives on YouTube. At some point I’d like to give a shot at doing my own uncanny horror paintings or characters, but it seems impossible not to ape Masaaki Nakayama’s character direction. He is a master of horror.
