I wanted to talk about magic the gathering a little, are there any collectors or players here? What is your favourite card?

My earliest memory was seeing the art of an orgg and the card “primeval shambler” in a magazine. Not too long ago I actually found the shambler in a bulk bin and keep him in my wallet. The magazine must’ve been Beckett when they still did Pokemon or yugioh… My favourite mtg artist is probably Wayne reynolds, but I also really love Ian Miller, Jesper Esjing and mark riddick (when they let him do stuff). To the day I’m not really into the story and prefer to watch the sets get revealed with a bit of constrained mystery, focusing on the art. My favourite planes are probably innistrad, Ikoria (old) kamigawa and Duskmourn at the time of writing this. My favourite card is probably sludge monster, but there are so many I love for so many reasons.

Back when the set for ikoria came out, they released Godzilla cards, which was huge as someone who grew up with him. A crossover wasn’t really unexpected for me. I’m used to being around things like this in comic stores, games and entertainment… aliens vs predator vs judge dredd, the super smash brothers games, Freddy vs Jason and marvel vs capcom for example.

I think now (even myself to a certain degree) a lot of players are a bit burned out with the crossovers, even if they pick and choose which outside properties might speak to them a little more. I would hope in the future there are less, or more thoughtfully chosen IPs. Especially to support their own worlds their writers and artists created. I would suggest anyone who doesn’t like the direction it’s going anymore to try the game “sorcery: contested realm”, which has a focus on traditional-only card art, which is something I will always wholeheartedly support.

Anyways, I’m still optimistic for the future of the game. What are your thoughts?
