Felix the cat is such an underrated animated character.

I remember watching the movie from the 80’s religiously as a kid on VHS. The tape must’ve been so worn out.

It’s definitely a fever dream. It sort of feels like it had taken a lot of inspiration from the silent film cartoons he had come from, dropping him into a strange psychedelic world with goblins, weird creatures, big machines and medieval, much more melodramatic characters. As a character himself he’s a good mix of both mischievous and gentle, while also usually accepting the absurdity of his environment. I think he’d make a great pair-up with doraemon, haha.

Outside of the public domain cartoons from the 1920’s it’s sort of a shame he’s stuck between complicated property ownership rights… (Dreamworks, universal, Comcast, etc). It’s always so interesting seeing how the art and design of Felix evolve as they reach different audiences (like street art and skateboarding, for example). He definitely deserves to be explored more with modern animation standards and techniques.

Anyways, it’s 2 AM. I have a lot of trouble sleeping sometimes because of anxiety and rumination around mortality/death, so I try to really distract myself… It can really frighten me as stupid as it sounds.

If you’ve never watched Felix please take a moment. He’s great!
