[ESC]Backrooms film // review and spoilers
I’m not aware of any other media outside of the 4chan story, so I was essentially going in blind. I’ll probably play one of the games later when my hands aren’t so tied to painting other horror stuff.
I appreciated Robert Bobroczkyi’s performance/character and the visuals there were stunning. The creature effects were simplistic but very cool. I was pleasantly surprised on how tactfully scary the film was using its claustrophobic, uncanny environment. The way the story presented mental illness was also quite refreshing. The sound design was awesome too. I love how the thumping bass meshed with the stomps of off-screen creatures which kept you guessing and nervous. Kudos to the young director for not “explaining away” everything with the scientist character as well.
I’m not really sure if it was intentional, but the soundtrack had a lot of beats that reminded me of the British musician Lustmord who’s known for sampling and remixing uncomfortable sounds into industrial music. (One of the albums I last picked up from Ameoba records in LA was heresy)
There aren’t a lot of films like this anymore so I was happy to have gotten to see this in the theatre (Despite another very poor audience was negative levels of etiquette). I’d say my favourite scene was the initial found footage when the movie begins, but as a whole it was an easy 10/10. I’d love to do a painting in the same, liminal style someday.
