Data Centers In Space

I don't get it. I've read several articles on it but it does not help. Maybe you guys can offer some insight.

What is the actual reason for putting data centers in space? I can't see how the economy behind this can work out.

  • Can't be construction costs - building radiation-hardened, micro-meteorite resistant server farms with support systems that are supposed to run for several years without maintenance and launching them into space simply can't be cheaper than using established technology on ground. Even if rocket launch prices are vastly reduced, they are still resource intensive.
  • Can't be energy costs - Okay, you get more sun light in space, higher efficiency for solar panels. Maybe it will have to be thrice the size, but I am sure that putting up a solar farm in the arabian desert will still be more cost effective over life cycle time.
  • Reducing environmental impact - I am quite sure that the people driving this don't give a rat's ass about the environment.
  • Avoiding environmental regulation and regulation - Okay, I can see that. But there are more than enough corrupt governments on earth that would happily take some investment money. Even putting the servers on a ship and parking them in international waters will be cheaper.
  • Can't be land costs - sure, space is big, but earth's orbit isn't really. And once it gets crowded some sort of international regulation stronger than what exists today will come in.
  • Safety from conflict - the soviets figured out how to shoot at satellites in 1975
  • And on top of all that, what's even the economic use of data centers? As far as I know AI industry is still struggling to find that net increase in productivity for their costumers.

Best explanation I came up with is that some tech bros combined the buzz words 'data centers' + 'space' and creative language to get investor money, but is that really it?
