seeing a point in time that hasn't happened yet is probably going to be an issue, and "that's not guaranteed to happen" does not sit right with me, so i feel like the machine should be physically incapable of ever simulating events up to the future.

my solution: the machine is unable to simulate events that happen during or after its in use after starting from a snapshot, and it can't take a snapshot of reality at the same time it's in use
