[ESC]Thoughts on Knights of the Old Republic
Recently i played KOTOR and it was very entertaining. The combat holds up pretty well even nowadays even though it's old. I'd definitely say the sound design is a lot more interesting than the soundtrack itself, which never really exits the realm of just "Star wars game music".
Unfortunately I already had the twist at the ending spoiled, but even if I hadn't I know I probably would have put two and two together pretty early on.
Some of the companions as well are just uninteresting, I didn't really care about Mission, T3-M4 and Canderous (which is sad because normally mandalorians are awesome), however I did enjoy the companion quests nevertheless and I think there's an interesting dynamic between the main character, Carth and Bastila.
Something I really was fond of, which I honestly feel like is a much better concept on paper than it is on execution when it comes to role-playing games is moral choices, a lot of the time I find them to be shoehorned in or otherwise nonsensical, an example of this is in the Mass Effect series by Bioware, wherein the line between a Paragon and a Renegade is between doing your job as a soldier of Citadel, and shooting little baby alien's for no discernible reason.
This is not something that KOTOR suffers from as much, as a lot of the time taking the easier, lazier option (force persuasion, intimidation, etc.) will net you dark side points at the expense of NPC's, which is a realistic way to portray negative actions as it really gives you an actual motive, especially if you're an annoying CRPG fan such as myself, who plays every character as a self insert.
Doing dark side actions and then receiving the notification that I gained dark side points actually made me feel somewhat guilty, as it reflected what I myself would do, and for some reason near the end of the game, to stay on the light side I found myself intentionally taking the more challenging options, such as that fuckass puzzle in the water level or storming the evil Rakatan base.
All that being said, Knights of the old Republic is the best star wars game made and I don't honestly think that any game, especially in the current canon, could top it.
