[ESC]Is Neuromancer going to be "Neuromancer"? (spoilers)
(OY! Can't you read?! This post's got spoilers for a book from 1984!)
So, that trailer for the Apple TV+ Neuromancer series was fantastic. It really hit the vibe that I was hoping it was going to hit. While not completely faithful to the book, compromises are necessary for an adaptation, and it does have the Gibson seal of approval. I've got just one concern that's been bothering me.
Nueromancer: The TV Show is made by Apple TV+, right? That means that it's been tied to Apple the company in a lot of ways, and I'm wondering just how much they've had a hand in it. As a big tech company, they've been trying to capitalize on the AI boom as much as the other players, and I'm worried that it's going to affect the end of the series.
Neuromancer, as its described in the book, is a hyperintelligence and that's all we know about it. We don't know about it's capabilities, what it's motivations are, the reason it exists. It's released into outer cyberspace, and the fact that Neuromancer exists at all was it's own kind of wonder. I worry that the people making the show are going to make a definitive moral statement about Neuromancer when that wasn't present in the book at any point.
