Cook with Geek // Recipe 001 // "Izakaya"-style cabbage

Hello folks,

In an effort to improve my own well-being/lifestyle (consider this a spin-off adjacent to my bucketlist series), I am trying to learn to actually cook instead of taking something out of the freezer and into a pan for 10mn

I'm doing this really little by little, simple things to prep once in a while and to try and keep this up, I'll share the recipes in here! Feel free to share your own, I'm looking for more dishes to try my hands are making, mainly parsing through Asian (mostly Japanese/Korean) cuisine since they are reputable for typically having very healthy meals

My mom (who's basically doing the same thing) shared this one with me, it's a simple cabbage prep that is apparently served in the Japanese equivalent of bistros called izakaya as a snack/sidedish and for having munched on it on several occasions, it can even get addictive hahaha ヽ(ヅ)ノ

  • White cabbage (1/4)
  • Garlic clove (1)
  • Salt (1 teaspoon)
  • Sesame oil (1 tablespoon)
  • Roasted sesame seeds (you can buy them in a salt shaker-like container or do them yourself)
  1. Chop the quarter cabbage in slices in two directions to make 1"/2cm pieces, rince & strain
  2. Put in freezer bag or tupperware, grate the garlic on top, throw the salt and the sesame oil into the mix
  3. Close the bag/tupperware, shake the living shit out of it to mix, let it sit in the fridge overnight

Consume within 3 weeks, serve with pinches of roasted sesame (squish between finger to crush it down further)
