Thought I bricked my phone, thanks Fi

So Google Fi has been pestering me for a hot minute to switch from physical sim to esim and today it was relentless, so I figure, wtf, go for it if it'll get you to shut up.

Thing is, then it goes to check the network and my phone locks up once it's done. like, screen frozen but refreshing every minute or so ever so slowly, not responsive to touch, and getting steadily warmer.

So I go search for the button sequence to force restart the phone, find it, press it, reboot, go to unlock, freezes again.

Now, admittedly I'm not super smart about how phone network communications work, but apparently if you leave your physical sim in the phone and switch to eSim, they make like Talking Carl and get in a fight about it. Managed to pop the old sim out of my phone and reboot and now it's working fine...

Initially I had figured it was some sort of bullshit because I'm running GrapheneOS and it couldn't dig its digital claws into whatever it wanted, but apparently it was a stupid simple problem.

Why am I telling all of this to you? Idk, partly to vent, partly as a means of admitting that, despite all of my efforts to de-centralize from my phone, it still would have sucked if it stayed bricked. Also as a reminder to myself to switch carriers. I got on Fi back when I was still a Google fanboy and I've been meaning to switch to a privacy-preserving service like Phreeli, but haven't made the time, taken the effort, and I'm always a bit hesitant when things sound too good to be true (even if the bar for "too good" at this point is basic human decency and some got damn privacy).

Anyone using or used Phreeli? Any Good? Regardless, thanks for coming to my talk, Ted.
