I picked up 5 games in the past couple of days:

  • inKONBINI
  • Retro Rewind: Video Store Simulator
  • Vampire Crawlers
  • Dead as Disco
  • Librarian: Tidy Up the Arcane Library

inKONBINI: It's a very cute and cozy game about working at a konbini in Japan circa 1995. You stock shelves, arrange items where they're supposed to go, and listen to customers' stories. I haven't finished it yet, but it's pretty nice. The sound design is satisfying, the art style is very nice, and the soundtrack is pleasant. My only gripe is that the main character walks SUPER slow.

Retro Rewind: I like simulator games, but I don't think they're the greatest thing to walk on planet earth. Most of the ones I've played are fun for the first few hours and then it gets quite boring fast. Retro Rewind, however, is a little bit better in that regard. I might be biased in nostalgia for old video rental stores and Blockbuster, but I still think it's fun. All the movies are randomly generated, the gameplay is actually engaging, and the progression system isn't daunting like other simulators I've played.

Vampire Crawlers: Holy hell, this game is phenomenal. Vampire Crawlers has the most playtime so far out of all of these. I was already a huge fan of Vampire Survivors, but added with my love for dungeon crawler games? chef's kiss. The gameplay is SUPER satisfying, especially if you luck out on getting a fantastic build set up. It also rewards you for going back to previous dungeons and completing them again. I love this game so far.

Dead as Disco: I played the alpha playtest sometime last year and it was a lot of fun! Now that it released into Early Access, there's a little more to do than just beating up waves of enemies until you lose. It's a rhythm beat-em-up game that actually does stuff to the beat of the music automatically, with rewarding gameplay for punching and kicking on perfect beat. Since the game isn't released yet, I might continue to play it here and there but I'll definitely do a full playthrough when it fully releases.

Librarian: This game was one that I saw a friend of mine had wishlisted. I had never heard of it before, but I can definitely tell it's one of those "time-killer" games. Don't get me wrong, it looks great and I love the vibe, but there doesn't seem to be much of a story, or point, to this game other than organizing books and cleaning up the library. You basically show up to an arcane library that's riddled with thousands of books scattered across the floor. Your job is to pick up the books, read the titles of them, and find out where they belong using the library map. The thing is, the map is in ONE location and there's 20 different bookshelves with specific labels to them. So if you pick up a book that's like "Tome of Alchemy," you have to put it in it's respective bookshelf that's probably on the other side of the library. I don't know, I might refund it before the 2 hour mark hits, but I've also seen that the more you progress the more convenient tools you get to help you throughout the game. We'll see.
