Why does Germany not build AI? (And what you can learn from it)

Jonas Andrulis, the founder of Aleph Alpha, is the German equivalent of Sam Altman (OpenAI), Elon Musk (x.ai), and Dario Amodei (Anthropic). In 2023, Aleph Alpha secured over $500 million in funding from the Schwarz Group, Bosch, SAP, and HPE. This made it Europe's largest AI funding round.

In September 2024, Aleph Alpha announced:

"Just having a European LLM is not sufficient as a business model. It doesn't justify the investment." - European Open Source AI Index

Then we stopped caring about it. End of story.

The learning you can make from it: AI is not worth the struggle and there are better ways to spend money and time.
